Mutual Funds
Index funds have gone from accounting for a relatively small slice of retail investors’ passive mutual fund assets to more than half in just five years. The share of index funds in retail passive AUM jumped from 11.5 percent in March 2021 to 55 percent in March 2026, according to the AMFI-Crisil Factbook 2026.
The Factbook describes retail investors as seeing the sharpest structural transition within passive fund products over the five-year period. And the change hasn't been entirely towards index funds. Gold ETFs have also increased their share of retail passive AUM more than threefold.
